Roadmap to the Boundless Sky

Book 3, Chapter 359: Prey

Book 3, Chapter 359: Prey

Mr. Yingwei threw the cane in his hand away and stood up to walk to where the chairperson sat.The chairperson had a bloody hole in his head. He lay slumped against the table, and his blood flowed out. Fear stood stark in his wide-open eyes.

Mr. Yingwei bowed to the chairperson before removing him from the table. After some searching around, he found an audio command device in a hidden compartment in the table.

This device released a unique soundwave. The directors could say certain words to it to command Wu Qi.

Heavy footsteps approached the door.

The security guards had come, but they wouldn’t dare to barge inside. Instead, in a nervous voice, the person asked, “What are your orders, directors?”

Mr. Yingwei walked over and pushed the button. The door of the meeting room slowly slid open, and he said, “Captain Anguang, how can I help you?”

“Mr. Yingwei...”

The security guard captain took a step back and bowed to Mr. Yingwei before greeting him. Then, he cast a quick glance into the meeting hall, where all the directors were sitting upright in their seats. They whipped their heads around to stare at him.

He bowed again. “I’m sorry for bothering you, but I heard an alarm just now. That’s why I came. Please forgive me.”

“Someone might have pressed it accidentally. This has happened before, after all,” Mr. Yingwei assured him with a smile.

The security guard captain bent his head even lower. If it weren’t for such a precedent, he would have barged in already.

“But you came at the perfect time, Captain Anguang. We have decided to retreat from this place. You need to come with us and safely escort us out,” Mr. Yingwei ordered.

“Understood!” the security guard captain immediately shouted seriously.

“I’ll be staying here to coordinate everything. Once I leave, you can go with the directors,” Mr. Yingwei continued.

When the security guard captain heard this, he was shocked for a moment, then pity rose in his heart toward Mr. Yingwei. He also felt a trace of respect.

There weren’t many people left holding the line outside. Wu Qi didn’t seem to be able to stop the attackers either. Otherwise, the directors wouldn’t be leaving. Anyone who chose to stay at this moment was an absolute hero.

As a show of respect, he saluted Mr. Yingwei. “I understand. If you don’t need me here, I’ll be taking my leave.”

Mr. Yingwei nodded with a smile.

The security guard captain took a few steps back before straightening his body and leaving with the other security guards.

After he left, Mr. Yingwei walked out of the submarine alone and cast a glance at the tunnel above. A peculiar light shone in his eyes, and he brought the audio command device to his mouth to say a few words in the common language of the island nations.

Back in the hall, Wu Qi tore through the net again and broke free, but there were already a few holes on its body. Some of the snapped ropes were also still binding him up.

It was only a matter of time before Xu Chan’s team would fully restrain it if they continued fighting. They were gradually getting used to their new tools.

Suddenly, Wu Qi acted differently. It stopped trying to defend the entrance and charged at them, which surprised everyone.

When such a huge body rushed forward at great speed, its power was immense. Xu Chan’s team spread out instinctively.

Xu Chan did not join them. He jumped back and retreated to the square outside the building while continuing to face the active biosentient entity.

The next moment, cracks spread over the glass wall, and a loud explosion rang out. It was followed by Wu Qi’s huge body charging out of the building like a bulldozer. Glass shards flew everywhere.

Wu Qi didn’t know anything about generating and releasing refined force, or rather, it didn’t have a human body, so it couldn’t create a martial arts system suitable for itself. Not that it needed one. Its huge body and weight allowed it to generate power that matched the Heartborn Force.

Once Wu Qi rushed out, it let out a loud screech. Its powerful voice made the area tremble. The windows of the buildings and cars further away cracked and even shattered.

Gargantuan waves of mental energy came after the sound. Xu Chan’s team members felt dizzy and couldn’t stay on their feet. Meanwhile, the response unit members who had retreated even further away once again started collapsing like flies.

Above Ferris Wheel’s building was an airship that was quite close to the surface because it was in charge of sending video footage of the fight back to the rear and the command center. At that moment, though, it started drifting with the wind. Judging from the height and its trajectory, the pilot had lost control of the airship. Everyone inside had fainted.

Only Xu Chan remained standing firmly on two feet. He lowered his center of gravity and prepared for a lunge.

He couldn’t let Wu Qi rush into the spacious area up ahead and let it do whatever it wanted, or they wouldn’t be able to restrain this large active biosentient entity. It could head for the combatants in the rear, and the mental damage it dealt at close distance wouldn’t just knock them unconscious anymore. It would kill most of them on the spot.

And if it entered the city, not only would there be countless casualties and great destruction, it would also become much more difficult to fight against it.

After taking a moment to generate power, Xu Chan stomped on the ground, shattering it in the process. He jumped forward with one hand shining faintly. Then, he slammed that hand on the exoskeleton of Wu Qi’s head.

Even though their sizes were vastly different, the power contained in the attack managed to hold Wu Qi back. It retreated far back after being hit.

When Xu Chan landed, he shouted and charged forward again. Then, he started punching at such rapid speed that his punches landed on the giant creature like rain drops during a storm.

Since Wu Qi had been knocked off balance at first, it couldn’t immediately escape from Xu Chan’s torrent of attacks. All it could do was to retreat while defending itself. It wanted to charge outside, but Xu Chan forced it back, and it couldn’t do anything but to retreat even further.

At that moment, Xu Chan’s team members finally recovered and joined the offense.

As they worked together, they were able to force Wu Qi back into its original spot. In the end, due to a misstep from being unable to control its body well, it fell down into the well shaft it had climbed out from.

Mr. Yingwei was at the bottom of the well shaft. He stood there with his cane and watched Wu Qi crash down.

Bang!

It landed in front of him.

Mr. Yingwei’s eyes shone with a strange light. It looked like he wanted to reach out, but the large, black shadow behind him swirled, and he squashed down the urge while mumbling, “It’s not time yet.”

If he wanted to successfully possess this body, he needed it weakened to a certain degree. Otherwise, he’d have to fight for control over it and wouldn’t be able to pay attention to the world around him for some time.

The black shadow behind him retreated gradually. Then, as Mr. Yingwei watched, Wu Qi got to its feet and climbed up the scaling ladder.

After devouring pure essence for more than an hour in Skyshark’s airship, Chen Chuan noticed the amount of pure essence dwindling again and came to the conclusion that the second wave was about to end.

He hadn’t gotten the chance to verify the growth of his potential after absorbing all the pure essence, but it had become much easier to communicate with the other world, as if the barrier that had been separating them had faded.

He checked the clock and found that it was almost the time when he had agreed to leave with Liang Guanghai. So, he brought the Frost King Saber in front of him, drew it out, and started wiping it down with a specially made cloth.

The Frost King Saber was the best tool to kill an active biosentient entity and an existence from the other world.

While his saber was still asleep, he could make it wake up when the time came. The saber had absorbed plenty of propagated offspring since the start of the war. It was about time for it to be put to work.

According to the plan, Chen Chuan had to deal the final blows to both the active biosentient entity and existence from the other world. A few departments had recommended him for the task.

One of them was the Cult Investigation Bureau. Ever since the ambush, Lei Guangcheng had brought a team to Ferris Wheel every day to inspect it. He had even set up an inspection station inside the company.

There was a reason behind it. With Lei Guangcheng’s approval and orders, the Cult Investigation Bureau had set up a ritual with novel ritual materials given to them by the headquarters.

This ritual was created to target active biosentient entities and could have a huge effect on them in an instant.

If the existence was in the process of possessing Wu Qi when the ritual was activated, it would also be affected by it.

Lei Guangcheng believed that since Chen Chuan had some degree of knowledge toward rituals and incredible durability, he could withstand the corruption from the other world. It made him the best and only candidate for the task.

The National General Affairs Bureau had also recommended him, though they did it solely due to safety reasons. They believed that the person dealing the final blow should come from a clean background, have no criminal history, no ties with other forces of power, and have worked together with the National General Affairs Bureau before.

There was another more important reason: Chen Chuan was still a Martial Valor University student.

At that moment, red light shone and danced behind him.

Chen Chuan stopped moving for a bit before standing up and turning around with his saber in hand. When he looked over, he saw red robes fluttering, and a figure with a goose-quill saber showed up in front of him. She was staring at him with lively eyes.

It was Hongfu, Martial Valor University’s active biosentient entity.

In order to ensure the operation’s success, Martial Valor University would transfer part of Hongfu’s power into Chen Chuan through a domain.

The greater the rapport the person had with Hongfu, the more of her power they could use. Hence, aside from Chen Chuan, no other person in the departments affiliated to the World Ring Defense System satisfied all of the mentioned conditions.
