Chapter 245 Story 245: Crossroads of Trust

The day after the lieutenant's fall, the group traveled in silence. Damien's mind raced, piecing together every hint Mira had let slip. She had spoken of survival and loss, of battles against these strange, intelligent zombies, and her unspoken connection to the Zombie King. But she held back, her secrets as guarded as her gaze.

The air was thick with tension by the time they reached an old, abandoned railway station. Overgrown vines snaked through the crumbling walls, and the hollow sound of wind echoed around them. Damien motioned to Mira and Elara to take shelter as he scanned the perimeter, his instincts on edge.

As they settled inside, Mira spoke up. "If you're wondering why I know so much about the Zombie King, it's because I've seen what he's capable of. He doesn't just command zombies; he manipulates people too. I've fought him before, but we were outnumbered." Her voice wavered, and Damien sensed something raw beneath her usual strength.

"Why didn't you say anything earlier?" Damien asked, barely concealing his frustration. "Trust goes both ways."

When the final zombie fell, Damien wiped the sweat from his brow, looking over at Mira. "This isn't just survival. We're hunting the Zombie King now."

A faint smile broke across her face, a glimmer of shared purpose. "Then let's make it count."

As they prepared to move out, each of them felt the weight of their pasts lifting just slightly, replaced by the strength they found in one another. It wasn't trust, not yet, but it was a start—and for now, it was enough.
