Chapter 269
Chapter 269
Nina and Nitey danced. They danced and they danced… But the sky would not answer their call, nary a drop of moisture stirred under the glaring beam of the sun.An oppressive Sunny Day? No. The Volcarona they faced had no need for such paltry moves, for they themselves were the sun. Looking up, the denizens of the island could see it clearly, twin suns hanging high above the sky.
“No Blizzard, no rain, no storm then…” This was one of the times where Nitey and Nina wished they had kept hold of the Mystic Water pendant, if equipping more than one Held Item wasn’t against the League regulations. Rinny’s brand new collar could have fitted quite nicely on one of Nitey’s wrists they reckoned.
But alas, they worked with what they had. So Nitey proceeded to summon yet another Hurricane, only to find themselves contested by an opposing domain. “Right, Volcarona can use Hurricane too…” Even though it was neither one of its natural elements, which just goes to show how overpowered the Alpha was to be able to contend with a Mega Dragonite’s control.
But Nina and Nitey wouldn’t give up. They just needed an opening as the Mega Dragonite blurred in Extreme Speed and reemerged above their opponent with his tail already in motion, a roaring tidal wave trailing from its crystalline orb — a Surf and Aqua Tail combo.
Volcarona quivered once more before inexplicably scattering into motes of light and reappeared behind Nitey with a full-body tackle — Skitter Smack.
“NIIIITE!”
Nina could feel the impact through their bond, but only a mild bump — a testament to their budding control over the Mega Evolution phenomenon. More importantly though, she could sense an opening, that little diversion had allowed them a chance to reassert control.
So the girl danced, and three pillars of Hurricane emerged to surround the volcano, sucking in water and moisture into the air while whipping wind and dragging clouds in their wake.
Hot air rose and cold air sank. And with the Alpha Volcarona’s Overheat in play, there was a lot of heat in the air. Water clashed against the fiery Aura of the living sun, evaporating into mist and further condensing into clouds. Until they eventually reformed into dew and rain.
Thunder crackled and a storm roiled all around Cinnabar Volcano only to be pushed back yet again by another burst of heat from the Alpha Volcarona, sending condensation further up into the atmosphere where they froze into ice particles and fell back down as Hail.
Ice melted against Fire, heat warred against cold, their conflict potent enough to further embolden the lightning in the air from violent friction.
Meanwhile, Nitey and Volcarona clashed. The Mega Dragonite whipped Water and Electric around with his deadly tail as Volcarona countered with beams of solar light and swarms of buzzing fireflies — Solar Beam and Bug Buzz.
Nitey’s scales singed against Volcarona’s Flame Body to no avail, the Dragonite’s scales were too hardy to Burn. Though it was only a matter of time as the swarm of Bug Type Energy steadily wore down on his defense.
Volcarona danced once more, their radiance so blinding that denizens of the city down below were forced to avert their gaze — yet another Fiery Dance, Quiver Dance and Heat Wave combo.
“DRAGOOOO!!!” Nitey cried out in pain and Nina winced, their senses momentarily aligned as the Mega Evolution destabilised.
That momentary flash of heat was so intense that small portions of the forests down below spontaneously combusted, only to be immediately put out by the drizzling rain.
“We can’t keep going like this, Nitey. We need to break this stalemate.” Because they truly were at an impasse. At this current rate, the battle would come down to attrition and Nina and Nitey were not convinced that they could maintain their Mega Evolution for so long. Even now, the soles of Nina’s feet were bleeding from exertion, it was only a matter of time until their domain unravelled.
Sensing his partner’s distress, Nitey roared and pulled in every scrap of Flying and Dragon Type Energy he could muster, to launch a dazzling purple orb straight up into the sky.
Nitey had a rare epiphany after their encounter with Rayquaza back in the Embedded Tower. For all intents and purposes, the Emerald Sky Guardian was like a god to Dragonkind. So, as harrowing as the experience was, it was hard not to be inspired by the Legendary Pokemon’s divine form. Especially when forced to confront his mortality in the face of Dragon Ascent — Rayquaza’s signature move.
Thus, through the grace of divine revelation, Nitey was able to piece together enough of his lingering insight to further bolster his Draco Meteor and create his brand new ultimate move… Behold! The Super Hyper Nitey Cosmic Sapphire Meteor ft. The Genius and Unparalleled Insight of Espy the Beautiful!
Nina groaned. They had spent days workshopping a sensible name for the move only for it to become more and more ridiculous with every single iteration. And as a matter of fact, this was the first proper field test of what Nina dubbed a Legendary-tier move, only possible in Nitey’s Mega form and only to be used under special and extenuating circumstances like this current battle where their opponent was strong enough to warrant it
The girl and her Dragonite watched as the transcendent orb of condensed Type Energy pierced a hole through the atmosphere and escaped into outer space, absorbing every single ounce of Infinity Energy and Dark Matter along the way to increase its density by multiple folds.
And just before it could break out of the planet’s orbit, it fell back down again under the influence of the world’s gravitational pull and veered straight towards the Alpha Volcarona in a single unbroken spear of light — Nitey, Nina and Espy had made the conscious decision not to break the projectile apart during their brainstorming sessions to limit the scope of its destruction.
The Volcarona, sensing the impending danger, quivered and attempted to break out into another Skitter Smack to evade the attack, only to be nailed straight in the thorax and sent plummeting back down into the caldera in an explosive crash.
The entire island quaked and the pool of lava gurgled and splashed. Were it not for Espy’s barrier shielding her, Nina would have turned into charcoal by now. And deep beneath the volcano’s surface, Magmars and Magbies, led by Blaine’s Magmortar, scrambled to absorb the volatile Fire Type Energy threatening to burst out into the world, causing quite a few Evolutions into Magmars in the process, and even one brand new Magmortar who would have to be relocated at some point.
Nina sighed. The impact wasn’t as destructive as one might expect, thanks to Espy who designed for the accumulated Infinity Energy to rapidly dispel upon first impact. By the time that Volcarona hit the ground, the potency of Nitey’s meteor should have been reduced to that of an ordinary fragment of Draco Meteor, theoretically.
That initial hit though, that was where all the damage was at. Volcarona would have felt like they had been hit by a meteor still hurtling through outer space. Again, in theory. They couldn’t afford to do a lot of comprehensive testing due to how destructive that move was.
“DRAGOOO!!!” Nitey roared out in triumph and slowly descended back into the volcano, all while cautiously peering deep into the boiling lava and broken caldera. They weren’t so naive to think that the Alpha Volcarona was defeated just yet.
And sure enough, once the quaking subsided, the radiant sun rose once more, one of their horns broken, a bald spot visible against their ashen fur and a nasty crack on their thoracic shell.
“RONAAAAA!!!” The enraged Alpha screeched, glaring at their opponent in fury.
“Heh.” Both Nina and Nitey sneered. Before them was but a waning flame struggling against the wind. “But no matter, in honor of your resolve, we shall see this through to the end!”
“NITEY!”
“DRAGOOO!!!”
“VOOOOOOOL!!!”
The Alpha Volcarona folded its fiery wings and conjured an orb of radiant light in front of their segmented legs. Meanwhile, Nitey arched his serpentine tail as the orb on its tip glowed an iridescent light.
The world turned white as Solar and Hyper Beams clashed.
And in the aftermath, Nina crashed down onto her knees as a surge of Infinity Energy vacated her body in an outflow of vitality.
“Niiiite…”
In the distance she could sense that her partner was thoroughly drained as well as he landed against a nearby slope and shakily dispelled his Mega Evolution.
The Alpha Volcarona, though, was now buried in a crater, their wings wilted and sapphire eyes devoid of light — the sun Pokemon had fainted.
“We did it… we won…” Nina choked, voice raspy from exertion.
“That you did.” Blaine affirmed as the elderly Gym Leader loomed over her, looking not the least bit haggard even after such a strenuous ordeal.
“B-B-Blaine?! Where did you come from?! Come to think of it, were you even around at all during that battle?”
“Hohoho! I did say that you were facing the master of this volcano, not me.”
Nina groaned then jolted as she came to an abrupt realization. “The badge! I completely forgot! The objective was to steal fire from the sun or whatever. Does this mean I failed?” The pitiful girl looked up at the former Champion with the full force of her Baby-Doll Eyes, eliciting amused chuckles from the man.
“Not to worry, I won’t deny you after such a spectacular performance.” Blaine reached into his labcoat to produce a vibrant red Volcano Badge with a sparkling yellow star in the middle. “You have more than earned this, young Melina. This and much more…”
“Right, you did say that I might gain more than what I seek or whatever.” Nina’s eyes sparkled, practically morphing into Pokedollar signs. “Sooo~ What is it? A rare TM? Evolution Stone? Another Fossil?!”
Blained chuckled. “Woah there, little girl. We’ll have to wait until Volcarona wakes up to settle that score. For now, you look like you’re in need of a bath. Might I interest you in a hearty meal and a free room in my inn?”
“The Big Riddle Inn?! It actually exists?”
“Hoho… Of course, it’s on the other side of the island. Been running it for the past however many years. The young’uns have been begging me to list it online or whatever but I’m too old to deal with all those tourists — good enough that I get a lucky few who stumble upon it on occasion. C’mon,” Blaine beckoned. “There’s a secret passageway that’ll take us right to it.”
“What about Volcarona?” Nina asked. The Alpha Pokemon seemed like they were teetering on the brink, steadily sliding into the burning caldera below.
Blaine waved away the girl’s concern and started walking. “She’ll be fine. A quick nap in the lava and she’ll be right as new. Volcaronas don’t just hang around volcanoes for no reason, you know? Sun and Fire, that is all the species needs for life — albeit absurdly large amounts of it. Good thing then that the island’s volcano serves as a node to the neighbouring leyline.” He also added that he would send some of his Pokemon to check on Volcarona later on, so there was no need to worry.
Nina nodded and shuffled closer to the edge to return Nitey before limping after Blaine with Espy in tow. She was dying to have a soak in the hot springs as soon as possible.
