Both of Kai's eyes managed to see through the trees of Shikkotsu Forest. Like [Piercing Vision,] its sage art variant did not grant Kai any bulging veins near the corner of his eyes. [True Vision], however, did allow him to see through objects filled with nature energy. Back then, the Piercing Vision would not even register those in Sage Mode or the trees of Shikkotsu forest and just show him an empty landscape.
But True Vision is still incomparable to Byakugan. He did not get a 360 vision or the ability to see tenketsu. Even his Sharingan did not have such capabilities but the two Dojutsus are different in the first place.
At this moment, his right-slitted yellow pupil is suddenly covered by a brand-like mark of three tomoes that begin to rotate around his vertical pupil like a spinning wheel, and Kai notes the reactions in his brain once more.

Because he simply doesn't want to chew more than he can digest at the moment. His schedule is packed tight and if he imprints a Rinnegan on himself, he would have to start a whole new research without any skill in sight for a possibly long time when he can grind Wood Release at the moment.
'There is no doubt that Nature Energy, no matter how little, is used with Byakugan. The Hyuga members use it unconsciously. Whether they can actually see-through individuals with Sage Mode is yet to be realized. But even then... there are ways to evade Byakugan. Although Sage Mode and Sage Transformation attune the user to nature to the point that regular sensors cannot detect us... Byakugan may still see through the Tenketsu. But what if skills like [Earth Travel] are used?'

After he completed the grind for [True Vision], he dispersed all the clones researching the Byakugan. At this point, keeping them up would be wasting his own chakra. The better and more efficient at this stage is to simply imprint a Byakugan onto his Left Eye and finally feel the changes in his body when it's activated. In fact, Kai believed that with his affinity with Nature Energy, he will have an easier time researching Byakugan this way instead of Sharingan.
Then Kai's thoughts drift toward the butthurt 'team' of his.
Tsunade has been practicing her ass off to learn Wood Style and teach it to Kai, maybe just to see him fail and act all high and mighty.
Mikoto has been rapidly progressing ever since she faced off against a nuke-boosted Kushina and came face-to-face with Kyubi. Her skills with Sharingan, be it dynamic sight, the ability to use Genjutsu, or her proficiency with Fire and Lightning release have gotten better over time. She admits that she is nowhere near Fugaku's level but she also has always felt a level of distinction due to her Sharingan. It's hard not to feel this way. She has managed to stand out in a clan filled with individuals who have Sharingans.
But now...
What made the Senju and Uchiha Clans so distinct just became another set of Grind for their man.
And for them, the worst part is, Kai now planned to blast them using only their specialties...
Well, first, in his defense, it's fun. And second, he just felt that he could do the same things better than them and show them how to perform many jutsus better.
There is another reason why Kai is more interested in this skill.
The sharing of consciousness. It isn't a hub. This means, while Kai has full access to the clones, the opposite is not true. This is the distinction between the original and clones.
Even Katsuyu's parts of bodies are the same. Although they are 'real,' they mimic wooden clones and shadow clones to an extent. One may even consider that Katsuyu directly forms a vast hub of communication through her parts and all these parts are not only independent to a certain extent but also have some hold on the original Katsuyu's chakra to help the summoner. Essentially, Katsuyu is living the best of both worlds.
But noticing that one clone isn't his limit, Kai forms three seals in succession once more and another clone grows out of his body.
And then another one.
And then another one.
When Kai starts to feel his head somewhat heavy, he stops and looks at the five clones in front of him.
"Try bringing out the trait."
Kai watches through their eyes and finds his vision divided by five times with each gaze staring at his own original body but even when the clones call for the status, it does not appear.
Kai sighs seeing this.
"Try using basic transformation practice."
The central clone muses for a moment and then pressed his palm together.
To practice wind transformation, a shinobi 'cut' things. To practice water transformation, a shinobi 'wet' things.
Similarly, there must be a way to practice Wood Nature Transformation...
Growing plants is not it. They tried to do so in many positions... and locked this memory deep inside of them.
But eventually, Kai did realize how to start on the Wood Nature Transformation.
Growth. Not using chakra to grow the plants, but using the already grown plants to actively absorb energy from the surroundings to grow. This act, by itself, did not require Kai's chakra but it did require his constant attention. Not only that but at first, the plant is made out of his chakra. But over time, as the plant absorbs more and more nature energy, this chakra would get consumed by the growing life force of the plant. As such, Kai would have to create yet another plant or inject his chakra into the previous one again.

Kai stands up and laughs even when the pressure on his mind has gotten mighty.
Just how did Hashirama Senju create many wooden clones... and how long must he have stepped on the grind to grow his mental fortitude.
'No wonder he could deal with the likes of Uchiha. Hashirama Senju must not only be a tank physically... but mentally, too. It shows in Tsunade... she's got quite the tank.'
