Chapter 111: Chapter 111: Admitting Fault
She was going to Su Dai’s house for dinner that evening and Jiang Yan felt that it wouldn’t be right to show up empty-handed. She should bring something.
There were thousands of items in the Space, but it was a skill to choose something appropriate and not arouse suspicion.
She pondered for a moment, then exited the Space and returned to the safe house.
She grabbed a few large storage baskets and placed them in the kitchen, then with a thought, she took some red sweet potatoes, potatoes, and onions from the Space that were better at preserving.
Previously stored in the Space, these items hadn’t lost a bit of moisture.
Each looked very fresh and plump, just like those freshly bought from a vegetable market.
...
Naturally, it wouldn’t be right to give these away as is.
So she planned to take some out in advance, just in case.
It was then that she remembered her intention to try planting vegetables in the living room.
Jiang Yan entered the Space again and took out three large white foam boxes that were used for seafood and fruit. After drilling some drainage holes at the bottom of the boxes, she then scooped some dark soil from the ground and filled them.
The dark soil had magical properties. Jiang Yan wasn’t worried that the vegetables wouldn’t grow.
Once all three foam boxes were filled with soil, she returned to the safe house and placed the boxes in the living room.
She scattered some Chinese cabbage seeds on top, then watered them with a spray bottle.
The whole process took more than half an hour.
Jiang Yan started to feel a bit tired.
It was only in the Space where she could control everything with her mind; moving these materials around otherwise would not be an easy task.
However, the eggs were incubated, the vegetables were planted, and the shrimps and fish were fed, which gave her a sense of accomplishment.
Jiang Yan took out her cell phone, set an alarm, and lay down on the Imperial Concubine Chair.
She had been woken up in the middle of last night and had a continuous stomach ache, so she hadn’t slept well.
Now, there was a little over an hour until five o’clock, just enough time for a nap.
Thinking this, Jiang Yan quickly fell into a deep sleep.
Around five o’clock, the alarm went off.
Jiang Yan got up.
The torrential rain outside was still pouring down “whoosh whoosh”.
The water on the surface of the central garden was empty.
In between, she hadn’t heard any music or anything like that.
It looked like the sort of mascot souvenir given out at company annual events.
“What’s wrong, little friend?” Jiang Yan acted as if she didn’t recognize Zhou Wei and Wang Jiamei, smiling at the little girl.
“Ha, I presume this beautiful lady must be Jiang Yan from 3201, right? My name is Zhou Wei, you can call me Fatty Zhou or just Fatty. This is my wife, Wang Jiamei; we just moved in last night... and have met Su Dai before.”
Zhou Wei spoke amiably as he took big strides toward the two women.
Wang Jiamei, with her red-rimmed and swollen eyes, also led the little girl over.
Although she put on a smile, it couldn’t hide the unease in her every move and gaze.
The little girl, however, looked at Jiang Yan with fresh curiosity.
Jiang Yan glanced over them and politely said with a smile, “Hello.”
“Brother Zhou, is there something you need?” Seeing that Jiang Yan didn’t show any aversion to the group, Su Dai had to ask.
Zhou Wei let out an awkward laugh: “Ahem, we just moved in last night, and we figured we disturbed you all, so we thought to invite you for a simple meal, as a way to apologize.
Of course, we’re only temporarily staying in 3203; we’re not planning to occupy someone else’s home. But this housewarming ceremony is a tradition in our hometown, and we thought it would be nice to bring good fortune and liven up the house.”
He suddenly realized that his choice of words might have been inappropriate.
The whole He Chunmei family had died in that apartment, and there were still some dried bloodstains between the tiles.
Inviting people now to liven up the place might seem a bit off.
But his words were already out, and there was nothing more to be done about it.
“Yes, yes, it’s just a simple homemade meal; we hope you won’t mind...” Wang Jiamei quickly added.
The little girl also looked at both women with sincere eyes, “Aunties, please come and eat at our house...”
Often, the barriers and wariness between adults don’t exist in children.
Su Dai looked at Jiang Yan, and seeing her gaze linger on the little girl, said:
“Brother Zhou, we’ve also already prepared dinner here, but we appreciate your offer. Just make yourselves comfortable living on this floor.”
Zhou Wei and Wang Jiamei seemed relieved to hear their words as if that’s all they were waiting for, and their brows brightened, though they still apologetically said:
“Ahem, thank you so much, you beautiful ladies! Really, it’s made us quite embarrassed, why don’t you still come by just to sit for a while?”
Su Dai had no choice but to politely decline again, “Brother Zhou, not tonight, maybe another time.”
“Ahem, alright then. We were initially going to invite you earlier, but seeing the officials’ boat this morning, we thought you might have gone down too, so we decided to wait until later. It’s our oversight; we’ll be more attentive next time.”
After exchanging polite farewells, they were about to part ways with Jiang Yan and Su Dai when the little girl suddenly looked up with her milky voice and said to Jiang Yan:
“Aunt Jiang Yan, you’re so pretty!”
Zhou Wei and Wang Jiamei’s expressions froze as they exchanged a look upon hearing this.
