Chapter 369: Paper Man
Chapter 369: Paper Man
The two girls sent by the Buddha Mother Sect were innocent and naive, seeming curious about everything.
Once they scurried down the mountain, they happily threw themselves into the bustling market.
In the market, steamed buns, mantou, malt candy, tanghulu... they visited every delicious food stall and vendor, grabbing items and running away without paying.
Their tiny cherry mouths appeared to be connected to a black hole, endlessly devouring everything.
Pig knuckles as big as human heads were torn in half by them, then chewed and swallowed, skin and bones included.
The girls joyfully ran through the streets, with a trail of angry vendors shouting and chasing behind them.
The Dragon Maiden had a bit of a headache watching them.
"Li Muyang, are you not going to do something about it... These are your little aunts..."
Li Muyang shook his head, "They take things without paying, what does that have to do with me?"
It was mainly because he didn’t carry any money on him either.
The Dragon Maiden never had the habit of carrying money on her.
Calmly following behind the shouting and chasing crowd, Li Muyang quickly left the city.
After leaving the city, the chasing and shouting crowd quickly gave up, cursing as they returned to the city.
Li Muyang moved past the returning vendors and soon caught up with the two girls who had been freeloading in the wilderness.
The two girls were running while fighting over a fragrant roast chicken.
They chewed on the chicken with big bites and complained about Li Muyang lagging behind them.
"You’re walking too slow..."
"Exactly, at this pace, when will we ever find the Immortal’s remains?"
"We can’t stay away from Buddha Mother Temple for too long..."
The girl named Xiaoyue abruptly stopped mid-sentence as Xiaodie beside her stuffed her mouth full with a chicken leg.
But Li Muyang calmly completed the sentence for her, "You can’t stay away from Buddha Mother Temple for too long, right?"
Seeing Li Muyang finish the sentence, the two girls immediately wilted like frostbitten eggplants.
"You’re so smart..."
"I hate smart people..."
Li Muyang, however, paid no attention to their small tantrums and asked, "Where are the Immortal’s remains? You can just tell me the location, and I will look for them myself. That way, you can go play, and return to Black Stone Mountain after you have had enough fun."
Li Muyang didn’t want to stay with the two girls and hoped to send them away.
But the girls unhappily responded, "Who wants to be with you..."
"Indeed, if it weren’t so hard to find the Immortal’s remains, we wouldn’t want to be with you at all."
"We rarely get to come down the mountain; we should be feasting and drinking to the fullest!"
"Exactly, we should eat the soy-roasted goose from Chunjiang Town!"
Carried by the chilling wind, the two paper ghosts stopped ten meters away.
They bowed respectfully, but the sight of two thin sheets of paper performing such a gesture was uncanny no matter how one looked at it.
"By the order of Lord Yangshou, we have come to respectfully invite the Dragon Goddess to his abode for a conversation."
"Lord Yangshou says that the Buddha Mother of Black Stone Mountain is malicious and untrustworthy, the Dragon Goddess should keep her distance..."
The two paper ghosts were extremely respectful, but their tone was both cold and stiff.
Li Muyang looked at the paper ghosts as he narrowed his eyes.
From the shadows behind him, the frightened cries of Xiao Yue and Xiao Die could be heard.
"Run fast..."
"Li Muyang, run fast..."
"The paper ghosts of Yangshou Mountain, they can absorb human souls!"
"Mom said they are not paper ghosts, they are demons!"
The two girls were terrified of these paper ghosts.
Li Muyang peered at the paper ghosts before him, but he didn’t leave immediately. Instead, he shook his head and said,
"My life won’t last long, it was the Buddha Mother who guided me, telling me how to avoid being devoured by this land."
"If Lord Yangshou can also tell me how to avoid being devoured by the land, then I will consider going to Yangshou Mountain..."
Having said that, Li Muyang walked straight ahead.
He didn’t avoid the two paper ghosts; instead, he walked right between them, heading in the direction the two girls had gone before.
When he passed between the paper ghosts and entered the woods, the two girls suddenly jumped out of his shadow.
The sticky, silky sensation on Li Muyang’s back vanished abruptly.
The girls looked at him with extreme shock and admiration.
"Li Muyang, you are so amazing."
"You’re not scared of the paper ghosts of Yangshou Mountain."
Yet Li Muyang ignored the girls’ praise.
He stood in the forest and looked back. The paper ghosts that had been in the wilderness were gone, leaving no trace of where they had gone.
But the appearance of the paper ghosts signalled one thing—the Lord Yangshou could wait no longer.
This sinister and mysterious old monster, for some reason, was insistent on meeting him.
Repetitive urging, and now another rejection. Should the paper ghosts return again... would they resort to force?
Li Muyang pondered and looked at the two young girls beside him.
"Can you tell me about the paper ghosts of Yangshou Mountain?"
"You say these paper ghosts consume human souls... how do they do it? How is it possible?"
